How to prepare Scholarship Applications The following is intended to be a guide to improve the quality of applications which are received by the review committees. I strongly suggest that each student use these guidelines while they are preparing their applications. A positive first impression is critical in the workplace of the 21st century and our scholarship applications should be similar to this. Each student may make one original document and photocopy this for each of the scholarship applications. Remember to keep a copy for your files as this information will assist you in future applications for college or in the world of work. 1. A short cover letter addressed to the scholarship committee. 1-2 paragraphs are sufficient tell of your commitment to education your educational as well as your future goals your availability for answering further questions or an interview. 2. A resume would be appropriate to include with your application Note * this is something you should already have from speech class. 3. Complete a data sheet listing all of your awards and honors, this will help when your are completing these applications and is very important for future reference. A copy of this may be included if you feel it may assist your application. 4. The applications - Type all applications (at a very minimum you may do these in ink). Keep all papers flat, not wrinkled and very clean in appearance. Check your spelling and use complete sentences for all explanations. Remember that all applications speak to your ability to sell yourself and they must present the best of your current efforts and abilities. 5. References - most applications will ask for three references but you may assist in this process by offering letters of recommendation to future employers or scholarship committees. - on official letterhead (or personal address), signed and dated by the author - 3 letters are the appropriate number. - obtain representative letters from business, school and the community. - keep the originals and send in the photocopies. - when asking for a letter from someone, you should indicate it is for a general letter of recommendation, addressed to "whom it may concern", stating how long they have known you, highlighting your personal character, educational commitment, community service, and other abilities which demonstrate your best characteristics.
